The Academy

To make it an exact quote:

“There is a huge amount of drama over Mistresses who “do” and Mistresses who “don’t”.”

The above was part of a speech I heard given by one of our speakers at the recent Woodhull Freedom Foundation fundraiser I hosted at my studio earlier this month. By “do” or “don’t” the speaker was referring to ladies who do or don’t offer sex as part of their “domination experience”.

The speaker was right. For years there’s been a huge amount of drama going back and forth between the two sides of the professional world. On one side are the ladies who feel that they have every right to take pleasure from their clients however they see fit, while on the other side are the ladies who feel that having an intense D/s scene with someone and finishing it by having sex with the client or giving them head not only ruins the D/s dynamic but also does a significant amount to blur the line between escorts and Dominas.

There was a time, for many years in fact, where escorts-who-dominate and Domina’s co-existed without much crossover except when one world’s client called someone on the other side causing accidental offense to the lady or mis set expectations for the client. However now it seems that the worlds of escorting and Domination are converging much like they have in other have in other countries begging the question; does there really need to be a line at all?

Some of our forward-thinking women in the US have already been adjusting to the changing tide and to both groups of women I applaud you. I’m sure quite a few of us, (clients too) have seen this trend toward “Full-Service Dommes” growing bit by bit and why not? I have always been a huge proponent of sexual freedom and as long as a Dommes skills are up to par in all arenas, I say go for it!

Who knows, perhaps in the near future it might even be safe to say a Professional Domme is a Professional Domme without there being the back and forth debate over whether those who do or don’t are “better”…wouldn’t that be nice?

I will say however, that with this new convergence, (in some areas of the country more than others,) all ladies need to really know all their skills. Read, ask questions and take classes in everything you can. If someone gives you attitude ask someone else; just keep looking for the right answers. We all know our play is intense and loads of fun but it also puts people’s lives and safety on the line so it’s imperative that we all know what we’re doing whether sex is involved or not. If you play on the bottom side, make sure you know what “good play” feels like so you can identify when someone is doing something to you that’s unsafe.

Just like with any industry, skill set requirements change and if one cannot, or will not, diversify to fit market trends they become obsolete. I, for one, am a Mistress who is quite happy to allow herself to become obsolete in the world of Professional Domination. Those of you who know my play know that I am a pure energy player and wicked sadist. Not only am I completely fine with not having a sensual “trade-off” to my play, I also have absolutely no intention nor desire to change it. I adore being an intimidating and realistic “schoolmarm” and cherish my clear-cut style of D/s and playful sadism. Some of you understand completely and you I will happily continue to see privately, but as of October 1st, I will be closing The Academy’s doors permanently to pursue my passion of BDSM Education, Alternative Lifestyle Psychology, and becoming the new kink writer for The Blade Magazine.

My thanks to those of you who have contacted me already to offer your skills and services toward my new venture. I will have more information about specific tasks and skill sets needed within the next few weeks as exact plans are drawn up.

Take care and all my best wishes for safe play and kinky fun,

Mistress Shae Flanigan
